Indian cricket team gives ICC a miss

13 Sep, 2011, 1021 hrs IST
LONDON: Indian cricketers were
conspicuous by their absence at the ICC
Annual Awards here with the team manager
claiming that the invitation came far too late
even though a few of the side's players
were there in the list of nominees.
The most prestigious annual cricketing
function of the year was given a complete
miss by Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men who
were staying at a negligible distance from
the venue of the function held last night.
Indian team manager Shivlal Yadav
expressed his helplessness, stating he was
informed only at 12 noon by an ICC
communication officer by which time "the
players were already away, some shopping,
some sight-seeing as this was their final day
of stay in London.

Dhoni gets ICC spirit of cricket award

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won
the ICC Spirit of Cricket Award for his fine
gesture of calling back Ian Bell after the
England batsman was run out under
controversial circumstances during the
second Test at Trent Bridge in July. "While
the initial appeal and umpire decision were
correct to the letter of the law, the decision
by Mahendra and his team to withdraw the
appeal shows great maturity. To see players
and officials uphold the Great Spirit of
cricket, which has underpinned the game
for more than a century, is very special," ICC
Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat said.
